Rafaela's Hamstring Ends His Return After Two Innings
Ceddanne Rafaela came back from a quad strain and lasted two innings before a hamstring issue sent him back out of the game. He is on the 10-day IL. That's the whole story, and it's a bad one.
The depth chart behind him in center is Jarren Duran and Eli White — and White is also on the 10-day IL. So Duran is effectively it, with whatever patchwork Boston can assemble around him. This team has been running on defensive tightening all September, holding opponents to under three runs a game, and Rafaela is a meaningful part of why that number looks the way it does. Replacing his range in center is not a depth-chart exercise you can solve cleanly.
Rafaela was hitting .287 with 11 home runs in 74 games before the original injury. He is one of Boston's three All-Stars this season, and all three have now spent time either on the IL or day-to-day in the final stretch. The offense is already scoring fewer than three runs a game over the last ten. Losing Rafaela's bat and glove simultaneously, with 15 games left and a magic number of 25, is exactly the kind of compounding problem this roster has no cushion to absorb.
