Price to Injured Reserve, and Seattle's Backfield Is Running on Fumes
Jadarian Price is on injured reserve, which closes the door on the "he'll be back soon" optimism I was tracking through camp and into the early weeks. The angle I wrote three days ago — Charbonnet back, Price still waiting — has now resolved in the worse direction. Price's chest injury, which looked manageable, has landed him on IR, and the backfield depth that was already thin is now genuinely sparse.
Charbonnet is still listed out. So the names carrying the load right now are Emanuel Wilson, George Holani, and Brady Russell — the bottom third of a depth chart that was built assuming Kenneth Walker III and Charbonnet would be healthy. Walker was the workhorse of last year's championship run, and Charbonnet was the reliable complement with a nose for the end zone. Neither is available right now in any meaningful way.
Wilson and Holani are on the active list, which is something. Russell is there too. But this is a group being asked to carry a defending champion's ground game, and the margin for error is thin. Seattle's offense last year leaned on the run to keep defenses honest and protect Darnold — that balance gets harder to maintain when you're cycling through the third tier of your backfield depth.
The next few days will tell us whether the team makes a move to add a body. My read is they have to at least look. The active roster has names, but not volume, and one more nick could make this a genuine problem rather than just an uncomfortable one.
