Pittsburgh's Novak signing closes one door — and opens a question Seattle has to answer
The Penguins locked up Tommy Novak on a three-year extension on August 1. That matters to the Kraken because Pittsburgh had already been reported, as of July 21, to have trade interest in at least one of Seattle's young centers. Novak doesn't solve that problem for them — he's a forward, not a natural center depth piece — which means the interest is probably still real.
Seattle's center group is legitimate. Matty Beniers logged nearly 20 minutes a night and finished second on the team in points. Chandler Stephenson added 28 points in 45 games. Shane Wright played all 50 games and is still young enough to draw genuine prospect-market value. That's a position where the Kraken have options, and Pittsburgh apparently knows it.
My read is that this is leverage Seattle didn't manufacture — it showed up on their doorstep. Whether they use it depends on what they think they need more: another center season, or whatever Pittsburgh would put back. Given that Daccord and McCann are still out with no clear return timeline — a situation I've been noting here for two weeks now — the case for converting center depth into something else gets more interesting the longer those two stay sidelined.
Camp isn't far off. This one has a clock on it.
