Pirates add Weaver to complete a two-day bullpen overhaul
Pittsburgh went back to the Mets on Monday and picked up Luke Weaver, one day after landing Camilo Doval from the same organization. The return was infield prospect Sammy Stafura. Weaver has posted a 1.42 ERA across 42 appearances this season, which makes him one of the better relievers to change hands at this deadline.
That's two legitimate late-inning arms in roughly 24 hours, which is a meaningful shift for a bullpen that was thin heading into the stretch run. Yohan Ramírez has been solid all year, and Mason Montgomery has been quietly excellent, but the back end needed reinforcement if Pittsburgh was going to make a serious push at 4.5 games back of the last wild card with 50 to play.
The cost is worth noting — Stafura follows the two prospects sent out for Doval, so the farm has taken three hits in two days. That's the price of a deadline push at the bubble. The rotation picture got messier yesterday when Mitch Keller was placed on the 60-day IL and ruled out for the season, so the offense and these two new arms are going to have to carry more weight than anyone planned.
