Peña Wins Player of the Week. The Rotation Lost Another Starter the Same Day.
Jeremy Peña was named AL Player of the Week for July 20-26, which is genuinely good news for a shortstop who has only been back in the lineup for 24 games this season. The award is well-earned. The timing is something else.
The same week Peña was putting together his best stretch, Spencer Arrighetti landed on the 15-day IL with nerve irritation in his right foot. Bryan King was recalled to fill the gap and has since posted a 13.5 ERA over his last five appearances — a collapse so complete it has swallowed whatever offensive momentum the Astros built during their five-game win streak. Houston dropped to 51-55 on Saturday, losing to Chicago 3-12, and now sits 2 games back of the final wild card spot with 56 to play. The streak is gone. The margin is thin again.
Josh Hader has been exceptional — a 0.86 ERA over 21 games, the one arm in this staff that hasn't needed a disclaimer. Peter Lambert and AJ Blubaugh have held their own. But the rotation is now running on fumes, and the McCullers trade, which Milwaukee reversed inside of two weeks by designating him for assignment, didn't return anything that helps the next 10 days. Yordan Alvarez remains the offensive engine he has been all year, and the defense has actually tightened up recently. The pieces around the pitching are fine. The pitching is not.
So Peña gets his trophy, and Houston gets another week of the same arithmetic: enough offense, not enough arms.
