Panthers add Bobby Okereke to a linebacker room that needed the help
Carolina agreed to terms with veteran inside linebacker Bobby Okereke on a one-year deal Saturday, the latest in a string of veteran signings the Panthers have made to patch a roster that took a beating this summer. The move is straightforward: Nic Scourton tore his ACL on the first day of training camp and went straight to Injured Reserve, and Trevis Gipson — the starter — has been well short of what a lead linebacker needs to produce. Okereke gives the room a credible second body with actual starting experience.
The depth chart at linebacker has been thin all summer by count and by quality. Cam Gill is the only other player who logged meaningful snaps behind Gipson last season, and that's a short list for a position that takes a beating over 17 weeks. Okereke doesn't fix the Scourton absence — nothing does mid-season — but he at least gives defensive coordinator something to work with when Gipson needs a breather or takes a hit.
This is the third significant veteran signing Carolina has made in the last few weeks to address specific structural holes, following Darren Waller at tight end and Kyle Trask at quarterback. The pattern is clear enough: the front office identified the gaps, found available veterans, and moved. Whether Okereke is the answer at linebacker is a longer conversation. For now, he's a warm body with a résumé, and that's more than the Panthers had at the position yesterday.
