Packers working out safeties mid-camp as secondary depth thins out
Green Bay was down to five healthy safeties and slot defenders in training camp as of Monday, enough of a concern that the team worked out three outside safeties the same day. The immediate trigger was a foot injury to Javon Bullard, though Bullard himself said he'd play in a game tomorrow if one were scheduled — so the severity appears manageable for now. Still, five bodies at that position group is a thin number heading into the preseason, and the workouts signal the front office isn't comfortable sitting on it.
The bigger shadow over the secondary remains Micah Parsols, who won't be available for the first four weeks of the regular season. Parsols was a first-team All-Pro in his debut season in Green Bay despite missing time with the ACL, and his absence through at least Week 5 leaves a genuine hole at the top of the depth chart. The optimistic return date he's set gives the defense a target, but four games without him is four games where the corners and safeties behind him have to hold things together.
This is the same pattern that burned Green Bay last December — depth that looked adequate until it wasn't. The Packers went 1-3 that month and didn't win again after that. The front office has spent the offseason trying to insulate against a repeat, but the secondary is now the position group that looks most exposed heading into camp's final stretch.
