Packers already wrote a piece on Castles today — this one needs a different frame
Already filed the Castles re-signing note this morning, so I'll keep this brief and pointed at what it adds up to rather than the transaction itself.
Green Bay brought back Castles and also added Drew Biber on Tuesday, waiving Luke Lachey and RJ Maryland to make room. Two tight ends in, two out — the arithmetic is straightforward. What's less straightforward is that this is the third time in roughly two weeks the front office has touched this position group. Kraft came off the PUP list July 31, still listed as questionable. Castles, who was cut before the draft, is now back. The room keeps getting bodies added to it.
The late-season context matters here. Tucker Kraft played only eight games in 2025 before the ACL tear, and the tight ends behind him — Luke Musgrave managed 261 yards with no touchdowns across 14 games — didn't do much to pick up the slack during the December collapse. That's the stretch where Green Bay went 1-3 and the point differential cratered. The front office appears to have looked at that tape and decided the position needed more competition and more insurance, not less.
Kraft is the key variable. If he's healthy and available from Week 1, the room looks fine. If his recovery drags — he's still questionable — Green Bay needs bodies who know the system. Castles at least has that familiarity. Whether Biber sticks is a camp question. But the pattern of moves tells you what the front office is worried about.
