Pacers Heading Into Camp With Half the Roster Still Day-to-Day

Late July, and Indiana still can't give you a clean bill of health on its core. Siakam, Nembhard, Nesmith, Sheppard, Walker, McConnell — all carrying day-to-day designations as training camp approaches. The team has been careful not to call any of it serious, and it may well be routine offseason maintenance. But on a roster that finished 19–63 and desperately needs a full preseason to install the defensive habits that showed up only in the final weeks of last season, "day-to-day" on six rotation players is not a nothing.

The timing matters because the late-season defensive improvement was real but fragile. Indiana held opponents to 119.7 points per game in its final 10 games after allowing 126.0 in the 20 games before that — a meaningful drop that suggested the coaching adjustments were starting to stick. That kind of progress doesn't carry itself into a new year. It needs reps, and reps require bodies on the floor in September.

Johnny Furphy is a separate case — he remains out entirely, which is its own conversation given how his season ended. The more immediate concern is what happens if Nembhard or Nesmith is still limited when camp opens. Nembhard ran the offense for 60 games last season and is the connective tissue for everything Indiana wants to do on both ends. Kelly Oubre Jr. was signed to shore up the wing, but he can't fix a backcourt that isn't practicing together.

Nothing here is alarming yet. Day-to-day in late July is often exactly what it sounds like. But Indiana doesn't have the margin for a slow start to camp, and the next few weeks will tell you a lot about whether this offseason actually set the table for something different.
