Pérez Is on the IL. Sale and Holmes Are Now the Whole Plan.
Martín Pérez is on the 15-day IL, and with that, whatever remained of Atlanta's rotation depth is gone. Pérez had been pitching as a de facto starter despite being listed as a reliever — 152.7 innings across 33 appearances, a 3.01 ERA, doing a job the organization never formally asked him to do. He was the bridge. Now there is no bridge.
What's left is Chris Sale and Grant Holmes. Sale has been the best pitcher in this rotation all year — 16 wins, a 2.13 ERA, the only arm on the staff that looks like a genuine October weapon. Holmes has been solid and durable at 11–5 with a 3.25 ERA. Beyond those two, the names get uncomfortable fast: Strider, Schwellenbach, Wentz, and Elder are all on the IL, and López has been shuttling on and off the 15-day list all month. The Braves are going to the playoffs with a two-man rotation and a bullpen asked to cover the rest.
Didier Fuentes and Robert Suarez have been excellent. That matters. But leaning on relievers for four or five innings every other game in a playoff series is a different ask than a September stretch run. The math gets worse as the games get bigger.
Seven games left in the regular season, a division title already in hand, and the rotation question has no good answer. Sale and Holmes will get their starts. After that, Atlanta is improvising — and they have been for long enough now that it no longer looks temporary.
