Overshown Is Out, and Dallas Has Two Linebackers for Green Bay
DeMarvion Overshown won't play against the Packers, and that leaves the Cowboys going into Green Bay with Rashan Gary and Von Miller as their only linebackers who have seen the field this season. That's it. Two players at a position that typically needs three to rotate through a full game.
This isn't a new problem — I've been tracking the linebacker thin-ness since training camp, when the beat narrative made clear that Overshown was essentially being counted on to be the third piece that made the room functional. He was the insurance policy. Now the insurance has lapsed, and Dallas is asking Gary and Miller to handle a full workload against an offense that will test them early and often.
The broader context makes it worse. The Cowboys' defensive depth issues aren't isolated to linebacker — the defensive end and defensive tackle rotations are similarly short-handed, with only one player at each position who has logged meaningful snaps. The defense has been held together by starters playing heavy minutes, and that works until it doesn't. Against Green Bay, it very well might not.
My read: this is a one-game problem that also previews a longer-term one. If either Gary or Miller misses time, Dallas doesn't have a credible option behind them. The front office knew this going in. They still haven't fixed it.
