Opening Night Is Three Weeks Away. The Crease Is Still a One-Man Show.
September 29 against Chicago is not an abstraction anymore. It is 21 days out, and Carter Hart remains the only goaltender on this roster who has played a meaningful minute for Vegas. That is the whole sentence. There is no one behind him.
I've been writing versions of this note since early September, and the situation has not changed. Schmid is in Florida on a two-year deal. Hutchinson retired in July. The veteran backup market was thin to begin with and has only gotten thinner. What was a roster gap in June is now a countdown problem.
My read is that whatever solution Vegas finds at this point — whether it's a camp invite, a minor-league option, or a late free-agent signing — it will be a stopgap, not a real answer. A new coaching staff inheriting a one-goalie situation for opening night has no margin. Hart is good enough to carry a heavy load, but no team runs a full season on one goaltender without a health scare turning a manageable problem into a crisis. Vegas learned last year what it costs to be thin in the wrong places at the wrong time. Three weeks is not a lot of runway.
