One of the New York Giants' New Cornerbacks Retired Four Days After Signing. Week 1 Is Now Ten Days Away.
I wrote last week that the Giants had cycled through bodies at cornerback all camp. It has gotten worse. Between August 13 and August 16, New York released two cornerbacks, brought in replacements, visited with Terrion Arnold — who ultimately signed with Seattle — and watched one of their newly-signed corners retire after four days on the roster. Three cornerbacks in eight days, and the position is no more settled now than it was before any of it started.
The depth chart currently lists Jason Pinnock, Sam Webb, and Nic Jones at the top of the corner rotation. That is a group assembled largely from the margins, and the churn of the last two weeks has not added clarity. Whatever the Giants thought they were building at the position in June, this is not it.
The rest of the roster has genuine pieces. The running back room is deep, Wan'Dale Robinson gives Jaxson Dart a reliable target, and Malik Nabers is trending toward Week 1. But a defense that cannot hold a cornerback on the roster for a week is a real problem, not a depth-chart footnote. My read is that this is the most urgent unresolved question on the team right now — more pressing than the quarterback situation, more pressing than anything happening on offense. Ten days is not a lot of time to fix it.
