October Without Him
Florida confirmed Thursday that Brad Marchand will rehab through October, missing the entire first month of the season. That means the Panthers open against defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina without their leading scorer — the same player who finished last year with 47 points in 42 games and was supposed to be the face of an aggressive offseason rebuild.
The timing is what makes it awkward. The front office spent the summer acquiring Brady Tkachuk, overhauling the goaltending, and adding physical veterans specifically to build around a core that could compete immediately. Marchand was the centerpiece of that identity. Now the team has to find out whether the rest of the pieces hold together without him, against the best team in the league, before he's even dressed once.
Some of the other injury news has softened a little — Seth Jones, Sam Bennett, Carter Verhaeghe, and a few others have moved toward day-to-day status heading into camp, which at least gives the opener a pulse. But Jonah Gadjovich remains out indefinitely, and the defensive depth is still thin enough that any setback matters. The Panthers went 40-42 last year with Marchand in the lineup for 42 games. The math on October without him is not encouraging.
Bill Zito said Wednesday he expects Marchand back early in the season, and there's no reason to doubt that framing. But early in the season and the first week of November are not the same thing, and Florida doesn't have the margin to spot Carolina a month of games while the roster finds itself.
