Newton's Practice Window Opens. It's the First Good News Washington's Defensive Line Has Had All Year.
Coming out of the bye, the Commanders opened the practice window for Johnny Newton to return off injured reserve. It's a small procedural step — opening the window doesn't guarantee activation — but on a defensive line that has been running thin since before Week 1, it counts as genuine news.
The context matters. Jer'Zhan Newton has been on injured reserve since August after tearing his pectoral muscle and undergoing surgery. Javon Kinlaw is listed as doubtful. The rotation Washington has been working with up front is not what the coaching staff drew up in the spring. Getting Johnny Newton back into practice, even on a limited basis, at least gives Dan Quinn something to work with heading into the back half of the season.
Washington is 1-5-1 with 10 games left and sitting 2.5 games out of the last wild card spot. The math is still alive, barely. The defensive line getting healthier doesn't fix the McLaurin situation or the offensive line or any of the other things that have gone wrong. But it's a piece. The bye week needed to produce something, and this is what it produced.
