**Nationals Sign Cavalli to Four-Year Extension**
Washington locked up Cade Cavalli on a four-year extension, giving the organization its clearest signal yet of who they're building around. The deal has no financial terms available, but the commitment is plain enough: Cavalli is the rotation's anchor, and the front office wants him there when this rebuild matures.
The numbers back the decision. Cavalli is 13-6 with a 2.82 ERA and 10.4 strikeouts per nine over 181-plus innings this season — by some distance the best starter on the staff. After Washington traded Foster Griffin to Cleveland in August, Cavalli became the unambiguous top of the rotation, and this extension formalizes what the depth chart already showed.
The context matters here. The Nationals are 68-77, well out of the playoff picture, and the rotation behind Cavalli has been a mess — four starters currently on the 60-day IL, and Jake Irvin and Miles Mikolas combining for a lot of losses and not much else. Locking in the one guy who's actually pitched like a frontline starter makes sense regardless of where the standings sit. The question for the next few years is whether the young position players — Wood, Abrams, Lile — develop fast enough to give Cavalli something to pitch for.
