Nacua's Calf Puts the Last Healthy Receiver on Notice
Puka Nacua left Thursday's practice with a calf injury, and the team says it isn't believed to be serious — but his status for Sunday is still unresolved. That's the part that matters right now. Adams is already out six to ten weeks with a ruptured hamstring. Nacua questionable. The two receivers this offense was built around are both in some version of doubt, and the Rams are 2-4 with a two-game losing streak and 1.5 games to play with before the wild-card picture starts closing.
What's left at the position is thin. Konata Mumpfield has played five games and caught eight balls. Jordan Whittington is on the depth chart. Stafford has 1,794 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season, numbers that suggest the offense is functional — but that production came with Nacua and Adams both available for stretches, and neither may be on the field Sunday against the Raiders.
McVay told reporters the team isn't rushing to replace Adams, and I understand the logic — you don't want to make a panic move for a receiver who might not fit the system. But the calculus shifts if Nacua misses time too. At some point "we're not worried about it" stops being composure and starts being a problem.
Eleven games left, 1.5 out. The margin for losing your top two receivers in the same week is essentially zero.
