Nacua Is Questionable for Monday Night. The Rams' Passing Game Has to Adjust.
Puka Nacua is listed as questionable with a hip injury heading into Monday Night Football, and that is not a small thing. Last season he caught 153 of 208 targets for 2,047 yards and 12 touchdowns — the kind of volume that makes an offense run. When Stafford needs a first down, Nacua is the answer. When the Rams need to convert in a tight game, Nacua is the answer. His absence, even partial, reshapes what this offense can do.
Davante Adams is the obvious fallback, and he is a legitimate one — 974 yards and 15 touchdowns last year from a receiver who has been doing this for a long time. Xavier Smith and Jordan Whittington are both active and available. Tutu Atwell is on the injury report but listed active. The names are there. The question is whether any of them can absorb the specific role Nacua fills: the underneath volume, the yards after contact, the sheer target share that makes the Rams' short-to-intermediate passing game so difficult to defend.
Worth noting: the Rams already lost Myles Garrett to IR on the defensive side, and Kam Curl is also listed as questionable. This team has been managing a lot of moving parts since the season opened, and Monday night is not the moment you want your most important offensive player at less than full health.
Nacua's status will likely be decided at warmups. Until then, McVay's game plan is probably built around two scenarios, and one of them leans much harder on Williams and Corum out of the backfield.
