Murray Signs to Practice Squad as Houston's Linebacker Depth Hits Empty
The Texans added Kenneth Murray to the practice squad on September 16, one day after placing Henry To'oTo'o on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. Murray, a former first-round pick, is the emergency answer at a position that has been hollowed out faster than anyone anticipated.
The timeline is worth stating plainly. Houston signed To'oTo'o to a two-year, $16 million deal on August 6 as part of the offseason's defensive overhaul. He played one game, hurt his shoulder against Buffalo, and is now done for the foreseeable future. Rookie DT Kayden McDonald went on IR the Saturday before Week 1. That's two defensive investments gone before the calendar flipped to the second week of the season.
E.J. Speed is the only linebacker on the active roster with meaningful snaps logged. Behind him, Jake Hansen and Jake Hummel — Hummel currently listed as doubtful — are the depth. Murray on the practice squad gives Houston a name to elevate if things get worse, but he is not a solution, he's a contingency.
The defense-first identity ownership paid to build is still structurally intact — Will Anderson is healthy, Clowney is back, the core is there. But the linebacker room needed To'oTo'o to function as designed, and right now it doesn't have him.
