Morrow Back; One Blue-Line Question Down, One Still Open
The Rangers re-signed defenseman Scott Morrow to a one-year contract extension on August 19, tidying up at least one of the two restricted free agent situations on the blue line that had been hanging over the offseason. It's a clean resolution to a specific problem — Morrow stays, that slot gets filled, move on.
The broader defensive picture is less settled. A second unsigned defenseman on the blue line remains unresolved heading toward training camp, and the Rangers have already been active enough this summer — Braden Schneider on a one-year deal, William Trudeau acquired from Montreal, a former Canucks defenseman added in late July — that another move feels more like a necessity than a luxury. The blue line was a genuine liability last season, and the front office has spent the summer acknowledging that plainly.
Matt Rempe is still on injured reserve with no update, which adds a separate layer of uncertainty to the forward group. The defensive business is the more pressing item right now. Morrow's signing is a small, useful piece of it. The rest is still pending.
