Michkov Still Unsigned, and the Window Is Closing Fast

The Flyers have roughly five weeks to sign Matvei Michkov to the longest-possible extension before that window closes — and as of early August, talks haven't started. I noted this yesterday, and it bears repeating: the silence is the story.

Last season Michkov put up 10 goals and 17 assists across 48 games, a minus-9 on a team that finished 43-39. The production was uneven, the defensive numbers were rough, and his ice time sat below most of the top forwards on the roster. None of that makes him easy to price. But it also doesn't change what he is: a young right winger with genuine skill in a position group where Philadelphia is already thin. Tippett is out, Cates is out, and Travis Konecny is the only reliable option at the position right now.

The front office has moved efficiently elsewhere this offseason — Zegras extended, Drysdale signed, Vladar locked in, Grebenkin re-upped last week. Michkov is the one that hasn't moved. My read is that the longer this sits, the worse the leverage picture gets for Philadelphia, not better. A young player who knows a team needs him at a scarce position doesn't get cheaper as the calendar turns.
