Michkov Is Still Unsigned, and This Note Is Getting Old
The five-week window to lock in Matvei Michkov on the longest-possible extension has now been the lead item in this space three times. The answer hasn't changed. He's still unsigned, the clock is still running, and the Flyers are still the team with a right-wing depth problem and an unresolved decision sitting at the center of it.
What makes the delay harder to read is that Michkov's last season doesn't make the case for patience on either side. Ten goals and 17 assists in 48 games, a minus-9 — that's not a number that screams "pay him now" or "let him walk." It's the profile of a young player whose talent is visible and whose consistency isn't yet, which is exactly the kind of player where the timing of a deal matters. Lock him in cheap and you win if he develops. Wait too long and the leverage shifts.
The right-wing situation adds pressure the front office probably doesn't want to acknowledge out loud. Travis Konecny is the one reliable option at the position. Owen Tippett is still out. The Grebenkin re-sign adds forward depth, but not at right wing. My read is that the Flyers need Michkov in the fold before camp opens — not because his 27 points last season earned it, but because the alternative is going into October with a thin right side and a contract question still hanging.
Five weeks was the number a week ago. It's a shorter number now.
