Melbourne Handed the 49ers Their First Test. The Injury List Did the Rest.
San Francisco's Week 1 opener in Melbourne was always going to be logistically complicated — long travel, unfamiliar turf, a compressed recovery window. What the 49ers didn't need on top of all that was more names added to an already crowded injury report. And yet here we are. Jordan James and Jordan Watkins are both out, Kurtis Rourke is unavailable, and Ephesians Prysock and Enrique Cruz Jr. didn't make it through either. That's five players listed out before the season has barely started.
The running back situation is worth watching closely. James was the depth piece behind Isaac Guerendo, and with him out, Kaelon Black is now the next man up at a position where San Francisco has historically leaned hard on volume. The receiving corps was already thin coming in — the Aiyuk situation hasn't resolved cleanly, and the room behind the starters was never deep to begin with. Losing Watkins, even as a depth piece, tightens that further.
I wrote last week about Collins going to IR and what it meant for the interior. The Melbourne game didn't change that picture — it added to it. The 49ers were already carrying real fragility up front and at skill positions before kickoff. Now they're carrying it into Week 2 with fewer bodies than they had seven days ago.
None of these are stars. But depth crises rarely announce themselves with a star going down. They announce themselves exactly like this — a name here, a name there, until the chart is thin enough that one bad Sunday turns into a month-long problem.
