McConkey Practiced Thursday. Questionable Is Still Questionable.
Ladd McConkey was back on the practice field Thursday after missing two straight days with the rib injury he picked up in Week 1. His status remains questionable for the Raiders game, which is a step forward from where things stood Wednesday — but not a resolution.
The receiver room around him is still thin. Quentin Johnston is active and healthy, and Tre' Harris is available, but beyond that the depth gets uncomfortable fast. The Chargers added Marquez Valdes-Scantling to the practice squad earlier this week — a 31-year-old with two Super Bowl rings and no current-roster spot. That's your emergency plan. It tells you something about where this group stands if McConkey can't go.
McConkey was the team's most productive receiver last season. The Chargers need him healthy, and Thursday's practice is a better sign than Wednesday was. But "returned to practice, still questionable" is not the same as cleared. They'll know more Friday.
