McConkey Exits Week 1. The Receiver Room Just Got Thinner.
Ladd McConkey took a hit over the middle in the Cardinals game and didn't finish. He's listed as questionable now, which at least means he's not on injured reserve — but it's not a clean bill of health either, and the timing stings. The offensive line storyline had finally quieted down. Rashawn Slater came back, declared himself 100%, and played. The center situation with Jake Slaughter remained a concern, but the worst-case scenario heading into Week 1 didn't materialize. Then McConkey went down, and a different kind of problem moved to the front of the line.
McConkey was the Chargers' leading receiver last season — 821 yards, six touchdowns — and the kind of route runner who creates separation in the short and intermediate areas where Herbert operates most comfortably. Quentin Johnston is active and healthy, which matters. But KeAndre Lambert-Smith is also questionable, and the depth behind those two gets thin quickly. Derius Davis is on the depth chart. That's the room right now.
The Week 2 opponent, the Raiders, may be without Brock Bowers after his meniscus surgery, which softens the defensive challenge. But Herbert's offense needs bodies it can trust. Johnston had a productive 2025 — eight touchdowns in 14 games — and he'll need to carry more of the load if McConkey misses time. How much more is the question worth watching heading into the week.
