McCarthy Sat Out the Preseason Finale. Week 1 Is Days Away.
J.J. McCarthy's ankle kept him out of Friday's game against Denver, and he heads into the regular season still listed as Questionable. A source told ESPN the team does not believe the injury is serious, which is something, but "not serious" and "ready for Week 1" are two different things. The Vikings go into the opener without a clean answer at quarterback.
The offseason logic was straightforward: extend Brian O'Neill, lock in the protection, give McCarthy a stable Year 2. That plan still exists on paper. Jefferson, Mason, and Hockenson are all active. The offensive infrastructure is intact. What's missing is certainty about the person the whole structure was built around. Max Brosmer is the backup on the depth chart, and nothing about this preseason suggested the Vikings were preparing for him to start a game that counts.
What makes this harder is that it lands on top of everything else. Adams is on IR. Chappell is on IR. The secondary is younger than anyone planned. The Vikings finished 2025 with five straight wins and convinced themselves the core was ready — and maybe it still is. But they are walking into Week 1 with their quarterback uncertain and their defense thinner than drawn up, which is a different situation than the one they thought they were building toward in July.
