McCann Is Out Long-Term, and Seattle's Left Wing Depth Is Essentially One Player Deep
Jared McCann was placed on the long-term injured list Sunday with a lower-body injury, and the timing is rough. This was already a concern heading into the season — I noted in September that McCann's health was one of Seattle's two most pressing unresolved questions as camp opened. Now the answer has arrived, and it isn't good.
The depth chart behind him at left wing is thin to the point of being theoretical. Eduard Sale is the next man up, and Lleyton Roed is listed third. Neither has registered meaningful production at this level so far this season. That's not a knock on either player individually — it's just the reality of what's behind McCann at that position right now.
McCann has functioned as the entire left-wing production engine for this group. When one player accounts for everything at a position and that player goes down long-term, the math is straightforward and uncomfortable. My read is that Botterill and Fletcher will need to look at this hard in the coming days, whether that means internal shuffling — sliding a center or right wing across — or something more. The news corpus doesn't point to any specific external option at the moment, so I won't speculate on names. But the need is real and it's rated high for a reason.
