McCann and Daccord Still Aren't Cleared, and Camp Opens Anyway

Both Jared McCann and Joey Daccord have been sidelined since late June, and as of late August there was still no updated timeline on either. Training camp is here. Nothing has changed.

The McCann piece is the sharper problem on paper. He played just 23 games last season and was still Seattle's most efficient scorer — 19 points at a rate no one else on the roster matched. The Kraken went out and acquired Mackie Samoskevich this summer, signed Bobby McMann long-term, and watched Eeli Tolvanen walk to New York. The net effect of all that movement was supposed to be a wash, maybe a slight upgrade. It's harder to call it that when the player who drove more offense per game than anyone else on the team has no known return date.

Daccord's situation is its own separate question. A starting goaltender absent at the open of camp forces decisions — about practice reps, about who gets first-unit work, about what the backup situation actually looks like if October comes and he's still not ready. None of that is resolved publicly.

The Kraken's offseason posture has been measured and deliberate, which is fine as a philosophy. But measured plans assume the roster you're building around is available. Right now Seattle's most efficient forward and its starting goaltender are both question marks heading into the first week of camp, and there's no clarity on when that changes.
