McCaffrey's Hamstring Puts a Wrinkle in an Otherwise Good Bye Week
San Francisco got Buckner back and now has a question mark where it least wanted one. Kyle Shanahan said the team is pretty optimistic that McCaffrey's hamstring strain is mild enough that he won't miss time, but the injury happened during the bye week — which is about the worst possible timing for something you were hoping to quietly manage. McCaffrey has 389 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns through seven games. He is the offense's engine in a way that no other player on this roster currently replicates.
The receiving corps situation has been documented here at length. Evans is questionable coming back from his own absence, Deebo Samuel is questionable, and the depth behind them is thin enough that Shanahan has been leaning on McCaffrey as a receiver too — 34 catches for 251 yards on the season. If the hamstring limits him in that role even slightly, the passing game loses one of its more reliable outlets.
The Buckner trade addressed a real structural problem on defense, and I wrote Tuesday that the timing was about as good as San Francisco could have hoped for. That still holds. But the 49ers are now coming out of their bye week with their best defensive player in Nick Bosa listed as questionable and their best offensive player carrying a soft-tissue injury into a stretch with 10 games left and a magic number of 9. Shanahan's optimism is noted. The next week or two will tell us whether it was warranted.
