Mayfield Pulls the Plug on Extension Talks With Tampa Bay
Baker Mayfield has shut down contract extension negotiations with the Buccaneers, expressing disappointment that a long-term deal never came together. Training camp is here, and Tampa Bay's starting quarterback is heading into it without the security he was looking for.
This has been building for a while. The extension storyline has been circulating since late April, and the two sides never got close enough to close it. Mayfield threw for 26 touchdowns against 11 interceptions last season across all 17 games, and he's the unambiguous center of this offense — Emeka Egbuka, Cade Otton, the whole skill group runs through him. That the Buccaneers couldn't get something done before camp is a real organizational miscalculation, whatever the gap in the numbers was.
Head coach Todd Bowles has publicly said the situation isn't a distraction, which is the thing coaches always say. Whether it stays that way depends on how fast the noise fades once the pads go on. The team finished 8–9 last year and went 2–8 over a brutal two-month stretch to close the regular season. They don't have a lot of margin for locker-room static.
Worth noting alongside all this: Vita Vea is reportedly interested in a trade to the Raiders, per recent reporting. Two of the team's most prominent veterans, both unsettled at the same time, as camp opens. That's a lot to manage.
