Mathis Back, Sanders Still Out — Buffalo's Interior Gets One Answer and Keeps the Problem
Phidarian Mathis is eligible to return from his three-game suspension this week, which is the good news. The bad news is that T.J. Sanders remains out following his appendectomy, so the interior Buffalo was counting on to finally be whole still isn't. The Bills head into Week 3 against Los Angeles with Greg Gaines, Austin Johnson, and Ed Oliver carrying the load up front — a workable group, but not one that was built to absorb a long-term absence at the top of the depth chart.
I noted when Sanders went down that this was the thinnest the interior line had been all season. Mathis returning changes the headcount but not the underlying fragility. Sanders was listed first on the DL depth chart; Mathis was behind him. Getting the second man back while the first is still recovering from surgery is an improvement, not a solution.
The timing matters because Los Angeles will test interior gaps in ways the first two opponents may not have. My read is that Mathis, coming off a suspension and likely short on live reps, needs a week to find his footing — which is exactly the week Buffalo doesn't have to give him.
