Malhotra Is the One Name. That's the Pipeline Right Now.
NHL.com released its top-26 prospects list for 2026–27 this week, and the Canucks have one player on it: Caleb Malhotra. One name, out of 26. For a franchise that just finished 25–57, that number lands with some weight.
It is not a condemnation on its own. Prospect lists reflect recent draft history as much as anything, and Ryan Johnson's front office has only been operating for a few months. The Novotny signing in August added a first-round piece to the pipeline, and the organization has been deliberate about signaling that the draft matters now in ways it perhaps didn't before. But the list is what it is, and Malhotra standing alone on it is an honest snapshot of where the depth chart ends once you get past the NHL roster.
That roster itself was built almost entirely around stars who couldn't stay healthy. Quinn Hughes played 29 games. Elias Pettersson played 42. The secondary scoring that was supposed to carry the load when those two were out didn't exist — and the prospect pool, at least as NHL.com sees it heading into next season, doesn't yet offer a near-term answer to that problem either.
Training camp opens in a few weeks. Malhotra being on the list is a real thing — it means someone outside the organization sees something worth tracking. But one name on a 26-player list is also a fair description of where the rebuild actually is, separate from the optimism around Buium's extension and the front-office restructuring. The foundation work is early.
