Mahomes is ramping up. His receivers keep dropping out.
Xavier Worthy is Questionable. Cyrus Allen is Questionable. That's the receiving corps situation in Kansas City as Mahomes works through the most consequential stretch of his recovery — the part where he stops being a rehab project and starts being a quarterback again. The timing is about as bad as it gets.
Worthy was one of the more reliable options Mahomes had last season, finishing with 42 catches for 532 yards before the knee ended everything in Week 15. Allen had been an early camp standout before a shin bruise in a special teams drill knocked him sideways. Travis Kelce is active and healthy, which matters, but Kelce alone doesn't solve the problem of a quarterback who needs live reps with his full complement of weapons during a window that won't come back.
The broader picture hasn't gotten easier. The Eric Bieniemy situation at home is a real distraction for a coaching staff that needs to be locked in. Leo Chenal is gone to Washington. The 2025 season already told us this team loses games it shouldn't when preparation breaks down — they went 1-9 in one-score games and won barely one in ten road contests. None of that gets fixed if Mahomes spends training camp throwing to the third and fourth options while the starters watch from the sideline.
