Mahomes is back, but he's throwing to a thinner room than Kansas City planned for
Xavier Worthy and Cyrus Allen are both Questionable, and that matters more than the designations suggest. Worthy was one of the more reliable pieces of the 2025 offense — 42 catches, 532 yards, a guy Mahomes had genuine timing with before the ACL ended everything in Week 15. Allen was the rookie who'd been turning heads in camp, the kind of early-reps standout who earns real snaps by the time preseason arrives. Now both are watching from the side while Mahomes works through the most important stretch of his recovery.
The timing is the problem. Mahomes got his clearance, which was the good news. But clearance isn't chemistry, and chemistry isn't something you manufacture in a week. The whole point of this training camp window was to get him live reps with the people he'll actually throw to in September. Kelce is there. Hollywood Brown is there. But the depth behind them just got noticeably thinner, and the names filling in — Tyquan Thornton, Jason Brownlee, Nikko Remigio per the depth chart — are not names that inspire confidence about the route tree Mahomes is building against.
I noted after Saturday's practice that this receiver room couldn't get through the first week of camp clean. That's still where we are. Nothing has changed except the Questionable tags are now official. The next ten days of preseason reps will tell us whether Allen and Worthy can get back on the field in time to matter, or whether Mahomes opens the regular season having built his timing with people who won't be on the field when it counts.
