Mahogany's Knee Puts Detroit's Offensive Line in a Difficult Place
Christian Mahogany is listed as questionable, which is the kind of update that would be minor news for most teams and is not minor news for this one. Cade Mays has been on injured reserve since August with a wrist injury, and the interior line was already operating without its starting center. Mahogany's situation adds another name to a group that doesn't have much room to absorb one.
The depth chart at guard shows Elijah Klein and Miles Frazier behind him, and the broader offensive line reserve group includes Ben Bartch, Larry Borom, and Devin Cochran. Those are the options. Penei Sewell is active, which matters, but the interior is where the fragility lives right now.
This was the concern I flagged back in August when Mays went down — that the Lions were asking a reshuffled line to protect Jared Goff and create lanes for Jahmyr Gibbs without the stability that a healthy starting five provides. Gibbs is active and healthy after signing his extension, and that part of the offense is fine. It's the infrastructure around him that keeps getting tested.
Mahogany's status will clarify before Sunday. But even if he plays, the Lions are one more injury away from a situation that gets genuinely difficult to manage. That's where they've been since early August, and Week 1 hasn't changed it.
