Maddox Is Questionable, and Detroit's Corner Depth Has No More Give
Avonte Maddox left Sunday's loss to Buffalo and is listed questionable, which matters more than it would on most rosters. The Lions' cornerback depth chart has been eroding since June, and Maddox is the third option behind Rock Ya-Sin and D.J. Reed. There is not a fourth option with meaningful snaps behind him.
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. is already out. That's been the case for a while now. The secondary was already short-handed going into Buffalo, and it came out shorter. Rock Ya-Sin and Reed are the functional starters, and both have been carrying the load without much behind them.
I wrote last week that the cornerback room is what it is. That's still true, and now it's a little thinner. If Maddox misses time, Detroit will be asking players without game-tested reps to cover in a rotation that has no slack left in it. The Bills game was the stress test. The injury report afterward is the result.
