Lowe hits free agency after Pittsburgh's best offensive season in years
Brandon Lowe is a free agent, and the Pirates have a decision to make. He hit 15 home runs with an .825 OPS across 67 games in his first year in Pittsburgh — good enough to rank among the team's top offensive contributors — and the coverage this week has been direct about what that means: re-sign him.
The depth chart tells part of the story. Lowe handled more than half the production at second base this season, with Nick Gonzales picking up most of the rest. That's a workable platoon in theory, but Lowe's power profile is different from anything else on the roster at that position, and the Pirates finished 82-80 in a year when run-scoring was inconsistent enough that losing a bat like his would be felt.
My read is that the case for bringing him back is straightforward — the team went 19-11 over its final 30 games, and Lowe was part of a lineup that finally started to click. Whether Pittsburgh is willing to pay what a 15-homer second baseman commands on the open market is the actual question, and that's an organizational call, not a baseball one.
