Left Guard Competition Adds Trey Pipkins to a Line Already Running Short on Answers
The Chargers have a three-man competition developing at left guard, with Trey Pipkins III the latest to enter the mix. That's the kind of camp battle that would read as routine depth sorting in most offseasons. On this roster, right now, it lands a little differently.
As I noted earlier this week, Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt — the two starting tackles — are both listed as questionable heading into camp. Isaiah World, third on the OT depth chart, is out. That leaves Travis Burke and Alex Harkey as the primary tackle options if either starter misses time, which is a thin cushion for a team whose offensive identity runs through Justin Herbert's ability to operate in a clean pocket. The left guard competition, whatever it produces, sits directly inside that uncertainty.
Pipkins is a veteran presence on this line, which matters when the tackles around him are question marks. Whether he wins the job or pushes the competition to a better outcome is secondary to the larger point: the Chargers are sorting out multiple starting-caliber spots on the same unit at the same time, in the same camp.
My read is that the left guard situation is manageable. The tackle situation is the one worth watching every day between now and the opener.
