LeBron Said the Quiet Part Out Loud
On his "Mind the Game" podcast last Thursday, LeBron James explained why he signed with Philadelphia: Tyrese Maxey is a close friend, and he wants to help Joel Embiid win a title. That's it. No mystery, no subtext. He said what most people had already assumed and moved on.
The Maxey piece is worth noting. Embiid's championship window is the obvious hook — it's what the whole offseason was built around — but friendship with a 27.2-point-per-game guard who played 81 games last season is a real organizational asset. Maxey was the throughline of a middling 46-37 year, available every night while the roster around him fluctuated. If LeBron wanted a reliable partner to lean on, he picked the right one.
The Embiid part carries more weight and more risk. Embiid played 45 games last season. He is one of the most gifted centers of his generation, and a title would cement something that has been conspicuously absent from his résumé. LeBron knows what it takes to get there. Whether Embiid can stay healthy long enough for that knowledge to matter is the only question that has ever applied to this franchise, and it still does.
Training camp is close. The four-star core is assembled. LeBron has now said, plainly, why he came. The rest gets settled on the floor.
