LaVine Still Day-to-Day, and the Clock Is Moving
Zach LaVine remains day-to-day as of mid-August, and so does Domantas Sabonis, Keegan Murray, and De'Andre Hunter. Four Kings flagged at once, deep into the offseason, is the kind of thing that would be a footnote on a healthy roster. On this one, it's the whole story.
I noted a week ago that Sacramento had built its reset around a player who appeared in only 43 games last season. That was already the uncomfortable math. LaVine's 18.9 PPG made him the obvious offensive anchor after the DeRozan release, but the durability question was baked in from the moment he exercised his option. These day-to-day designations, now stretching into the second full week of August, haven't changed the math — they've just made it louder.
The timing matters because training camp isn't far off, and the Kings open their NBA Cup schedule against the Spurs — and De'Aaron Fox — in what figures to be an early referendum on whether this group can compete. Sacramento shed its most reliable perimeter scorer and replaced him with a higher-ceiling, lower-availability version. That trade works if LaVine is on the floor. It doesn't have an obvious fallback if he isn't, and Westbrook, Monk, and Raynaud are continuity pieces, not replacements for the primary option.
Nothing here is alarming in isolation — day-to-day in August is not the same as day-to-day in November. But the pattern is worth watching. This is a franchise coming off 22 wins that made one enormous bet. The bet needs to be healthy enough to take the floor.
