Lakers add Matisse Thybulle on one-year deal as defensive retooling continues
The Lakers signed free agent forward Matisse Thybulle to a one-year, $3.3 million contract on July 20, the latest move in an offseason that has leaned heavily toward defensive identity. Thybulle, one of the more disruptive perimeter defenders in the league, fits the profile Los Angeles has been assembling since acquiring Walker Kessler from Utah earlier this month.
The signing comes as the team continues to absorb the departures of Rui Hachimura and Luke Kennard, two wing contributors who combined for meaningful scoring volume last season. Thybulle does not replace that production — his value has always been on the other end — but he adds another switchable, high-effort defender to a group that already includes Marcus Smart and Jarred Vanderbilt.
The roster is still in flux. Ziaire Williams, signed a week earlier to address the wing-scoring gap, is currently day-to-day, and Luka Doncic carries the same designation heading into training camp. Thybulle's arrival is a depth move, not a solution to the offensive questions this offseason has left open.
