Korczak Walks Into a Depth Chart That Needs Him More Than Expected
Jones and Hallander are still out, and Pittsburgh is now close enough to training camp that the question has shifted from *when* to *whether*. Neither defenseman has a clear return timeline, which means the blue line that opens camp will look considerably thinner than the one the front office drew up in the spring.
That's where Kaedan Korczak lands. The Wotherspoon trade was framed as a cap move — Pittsburgh freed up more than $3 million — with Korczak as a reasonable return piece. That framing has aged poorly. With two roster defensemen unavailable, Korczak isn't a depth option competing for a bottom-pairing spot. He's a near-certain opening-night piece, and the margin for a slow adjustment is essentially gone. Karlsson and Letang are still anchoring the top of the blue line, but what sits beneath them matters more than it did in July.
The front office has been connected to veteran defensive free agents throughout the summer, and my read is that connection stays active until camp actually opens. Pittsburgh doesn't have the luxury of waiting on Jones and Hallander to sort themselves out — not with this group, not heading into a season where the close-game execution problem from last year still hasn't been structurally fixed. Korczak may be fine. He may be exactly what this situation requires. But "may be" is doing a lot of work right now, and camp is almost here.
