Korchinski Gets His Two Years
The Blackhawks locked up defenseman Kevin Korchinski on a two-year contract Saturday, adding a small piece of stability to a blue line that has been anything but. Korchinski, 22, played 53 games last season and was a restricted free agent heading into camp. The deal gets him signed and keeps the young defensive core intact.
The timing is worth noting. Byram is here, but Levshunov, Ellis, and Grzelcyk are all still out with no return dates in sight — same list I've been running since August. That means Korchinski isn't just a depth piece right now; he's going to be asked to play real minutes while the cavalry waits. Whether he's ready for that is the open question, but Chicago didn't have the luxury of leaving him unsigned while they figured it out.
Two years is a reasonable bridge. It buys the organization time to see what Korchinski becomes once Levshunov and Byram are both healthy and the back end is actually whole. If he develops, great. If he plateaus, the contract doesn't trap anyone. Quiet move, sensible terms, right situation for it.
