Key Lands on IR, and the Defensive Edge Depth Is Now Thin
Arden Key is on injured reserve, which I noted when it happened two days ago. What's worth flagging now is where that leaves the defensive end position heading into the next stretch of games. George Gumbs and Mitchell Melton are the names behind him on the depth chart — neither has logged significant snaps this season.
The secondary was already the most discussed vulnerability on this roster coming out of the offseason, with Charvarius Ward listed as Questionable and the cornerback depth chart running thin behind Justin Walley. Key's absence extends that defensive fragility past the secondary and into the pass rush, which is a different kind of problem. A shaky secondary gets worse when opposing quarterbacks have time.
Laiatu Latu is active and figures into the defensive line rotation, which is something. But the edge is where Key's absence is felt most directly, and right now Gumbs and Melton are what's there.
