Kelce gutted through Week 5 on a bad ankle, and that tells you everything about where this receiving corps stands
Travis Kelce played through an ankle injury in Week 5, which is the kind of thing that sounds like toughness until you think about what it means: Kansas City needed him badly enough that sitting him was not really an option. Rashee Rice is out. Tyquan Thornton has been gone for weeks. The depth chart at receiver currently runs through Nikko Remigio and Cyrus Allen, names I have been tracking all month as the situation kept getting thinner.
Kelce has been the anchor of this offense for years, and his 2025 numbers — 76 catches, 851 yards, five touchdowns — reflect what a healthy, full-load version of him looks like. An ankle injury changes that math. It limits his route tree, affects his ability to create separation after the catch, and puts more stress on a quarterback still carefully managing his own workload coming off a torn ACL and LCL. That is a lot of fragility concentrated in two people.
The rest of the room is improvisation at this point. Noah Gray is a capable backup tight end, not a featured weapon. The wide receiver group behind Rice is thin by any measure, and I noted after Thornton went down that the names behind him were not built to carry a full offense. That assessment has not changed. What has changed is that now the one player who was supposed to hold all of this together is doing so on one good ankle.
