Kawhi Chose Toronto. That Tells You Something.
The ESPN report out Wednesday says Leonard specifically wanted Toronto over other championship contenders — that this wasn't simply a case of the Raptors being the last team standing after the Clippers declined to extend him. He chose this. The specifics of his reasoning haven't been fully detailed in what's been published, but the headline fact matters on its own: a 35-year-old with options pointed at Toronto.
It fits, in a narrow way. Leonard won his only championship as a Raptor, in 2019, in what remains one of the more singular playoff runs in recent memory. Whatever complicated the years after — the departures, the Clippers tenure, the injuries — that summer in Toronto was real. There's apparently enough residue there to matter when he was weighing destinations.
What it reveals about the Raptors' bet is mostly this: they needed Leonard to want to come, and he did. The front office gave up Ingram, Gradey Dick, and two unprotected first-rounders, then waited out 75 days of league investigation to get here. The organizational logic only works if Leonard is genuinely bought in, not just placed. Wednesday's report suggests he is, at least at the start.
The harder questions — his health at 35, the thinned roster around him, Barrett's availability — those don't change because Leonard preferred Toronto. But a star who wants to be somewhere is a better foundation than one who tolerates it. The Raptors needed that to be true. For now, it appears to be.
