Jordan Is Out for Week 1, and Colby Wooden Is the Answer New Orleans Has
Cameron Jordan is out. The hamstring injury he picked up in mid-August never cleared, and the 37-year-old defensive end will not play against Detroit. That's the situation heading into Week 1, and it's worth sitting with for a moment — not because it's surprising at this point, but because the depth chart behind him is thin in a way that's hard to paper over.
Colby Wooden is the only defensive end listed with meaningful standing on the current roster. That's not a knock on Wooden so much as a statement of where things are. Jordan has been the emotional and functional anchor of this defensive front for well over a decade — a perennial Pro Bowl presence who chose to come back to New Orleans this offseason. The Saints built their pass-rush identity around him for years. Wooden has not been asked to carry that role, and Week 1 against Detroit is an abrupt place to start.
The broader defensive picture makes it harder. Bryan Bresee is gone for the season with a torn ACL. Dillon Radunz is on injured reserve. Lorenzo Styles Jr. is on injured reserve. The front office spent the summer solving offensive problems — Olave's extension, the Kamara situation, the receiver depth — and the defense has arrived at the opener hollowed out in ways that weren't fully anticipated even a month ago. I noted in late August that the names behind Jordan and Bresee were unfamiliar. They still are.
Jordan may return at some point. His status is out, not done for the year, and that matters. But for now, New Orleans opens the season asking Colby Wooden and a thin rotation to hold the edge. That's a real ask.
