Jones Is Questionable. Mason Is Fresh. Claiborne Is the Name to Know.
Aaron Jones Sr. is listed as questionable for Sunday at Detroit, and at this point that's about where we expected to land after Kevin O'Connell's day-to-day designation Monday. Jones has carried this backfield through six weeks — 463 rushing yards and two touchdowns while Mason was recovering from thumb surgery — so the Vikings aren't going to rush him into Ford Field if he's not right.
The good news is Mason is back and cleared, which gives the offense a real option rather than a scramble. He logged 144 rushing yards and a touchdown in three games before the thumb ended his early season, so there's a track record, however brief. If Jones is limited or sits, Mason steps into a role he was supposed to have from the start.
The name worth watching on the depth chart is Demond Claiborne. He's third in the backfield pecking order and has 65 rushing yards across six games — quiet work, but he's been active and available all season. If this game gets physical and Mason needs a breather, Claiborne is who O'Connell turns to. That's a thinner margin than you'd want going into a divisional road game, but it's what the roster is.
The Vikings are 6-0 and have managed through worse uncertainty than this. Still, the backfield situation is worth tracking through the week. Jones practicing in full by Friday changes the conversation entirely. Anything short of that, and Mason is the starter against Detroit whether the timeline was right or not.
