Jazz commit $157.5 million to Keyonte George as their rebuild's centerpiece
Utah and Keyonte George agreed to a five-year, $157.5 million extension on September 18, locking in the guard through the heart of the franchise's rebuild. George averaged 23.0 points and 6.1 assists last season — placing him among a small group of NBA players to reach both thresholds — and did so in his third year in the league.
The extension lands against a complicated backdrop. Utah finished 22-60 in 2026, going 1-9 over its final 10 games as the defense allowed 132.8 points per game in that stretch. George played only 58 of those 82 games. The front office is betting that the efficiency the roster showed in close games — a 45% win rate in games decided by five points or fewer, nearly double the team's overall mark — reflects something real about this core's ceiling.
The offseason has already brought significant turnover around George. Walker Kessler was traded to the Lakers, Cody Williams was dealt to Minnesota, and backcourt injuries to Trey Alexander and Jamir Watkins have thinned the depth behind him. Josh Green arrived via trade to shore up perimeter defense, and Jusuf Nurkic signed a two-year, $22 million deal to anchor the center. George is now the clearest long-term commitment on the roster, with Lauri Markkanen and the young wings filling out a team still searching for its identity heading into 2026-27.
