Islanders Fill Out Front Office, Completing AHL Overhaul Under Darche
The Islanders added a new AHL general manager Monday, finishing the organizational restructuring Mathieu Darche's staff has been building toward all summer. It's a quiet move on its face — an executive hire that won't show up in a box score — but it closes out a deliberate push to shore up the infrastructure below the NHL roster.
The timing makes sense. This franchise spent last season leaning heavily on a short list of core contributors, and when that list got shorter — through injury, fatigue, the usual late-season compression — there wasn't enough behind it. The 3–7 finish said as much. Strengthening the Bridgeport pipeline isn't a glamorous fix, but it's the right category of problem to address.
The hire also follows the reported pursuit of Evan Gold, the former Bruins assistant GM whose AHL experience in Providence made him a logical fit for exactly this kind of role. Whether Gold is the man who landed the job isn't confirmed in what's been reported, but the front-office build-out has clearly been intentional rather than reactive.
None of this resolves the injury situation — Barzal, Palmieri, Pulock, Romanov, Varlamov, and Engvall are still unavailable, and that's the problem that actually determines next season. But getting the organizational chart right before camp opens is the kind of background work that matters eventually. The Islanders are doing it.
